Sholay To Re-release In 4K With Original Climax:

The iconic 1975 classic Sholay is set to return to cinemas in a newly remastered 4K version, offering fans a chance to experience the film with better visuals, improved sound, and a fresh viewing feel. Even after nearly five decades, Sholay remains one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema, remembered for its unforgettable characters, powerful dialogues, emotional depth and genre-defining storytelling. Its impact on pop culture is unmatched, and every generation continues to rediscover it with the same excitement.

What makes this re-release even more special is the renewed attention on the film’s original climax — a version that was changed before the theatrical release. In the version audiences have always seen, Thakur, driven by grief and anger, almost kills Gabbar Singh with his iron-fitted shoes but eventually stops when the police arrive. He chooses to let the law decide Gabbar’s fate. This ending was considered more in line with censorship norms of that era, which strongly suggested that justice must be delivered through legal means, not personal revenge.

However, the originally written climax was much darker and more intense. In that version, Thakur does kill Gabbar. Overwhelmed by the pain of losing his family, he beats Gabbar brutally using only his toes — his symbolic weapons after losing both hands. The sequence ends with Gabbar hitting a rod on the wall, only to lose his life from the impact. It was a raw and powerful conclusion that highlighted the emotional weight of Thakur’s tragedy and for a revenge drama, it was an apt ending too.
