NHRC Seeks Action Against Ranbir Kapoor:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Mumbai Police regarding a complaint against Netflix’s web series The Bads of Bollywood.

The complaint, filed by Vinay Joshi from the Legal Rights Observatory, pointed out that in Season 1, Episode 7 (last one) of the show, actor Ranbir Kapoor was allegedly shown using a banned e-cigarette on screen. According to the complainant, this scene was streamed without any statutory warning or disclaimer, which could mislead young viewers and promote the use of prohibited substances.

The NHRC noted that the allegations, if true, reflect serious violations of the law. The incident is said to contravene the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, which bans the storage, use, and promotion of e-cigarettes in any form. Section 7 of the Act also penalizes individuals and companies that advertise or promote such products.

The Commission has asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to take immediate steps to prevent such content that may negatively influence young generations. It has also directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to investigate the role of manufacturers, importers, producers, and others involved in the episode. The authorities have been instructed to file an FIR if necessary and report back within two weeks.

The complainant further argued that showing a popular actor like Ranbir Kapoor using an e-cigarette amounts to encouraging illegal activity, disrespecting law enforcement, and harming public health. The NHRC has treated the matter seriously and emphasized that strict legal action should be considered against the actors, producers, and the streaming platform. Authorities must now submit their ATR to the Commission for review in the coming weeks.
