Supreme Court Rejects Jacqueline Fernandez's Plea:

The Supreme Court of India on Monday dismissed a plea by Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez relating to the ₹200-crore money laundering case tied to conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar

Fernandez had asked the Court to quash the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), which is similar to an FIR, filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). She challenged a Delhi High Court ruling from July 3 that refused to drop the case against her.

In her petition, she argued that she was falsely implicated, saying she was unaware of Sukesh’s criminal history and was a victim of his deceit. She also pointed out that the ED’s own documents reportedly show that Sukesh was using phones and devices from inside Tihar Jail, allegedly with help from jail officials.

However, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and A. G. Masih, refused to interfere at this stage. They said that deciding innocence or knowledge must wait until the case is heard in full at trial. The ED alleges Fernandez received luxury gifts worth over ₹7 crore from Sukesh, including designer items, even though, she claims, she did not know about his criminal acts.

The case itself arose from accusations that Sukesh Chandrasekhar defrauded the spouses of former Ranbaxy promoters, Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh, of about ₹200-₹215 crore.

With the apex court’s dismissal, trial proceedings will continue. Fernandez has been given liberty to move the Court at an appropriate stage, should there be new grounds.
