The issue began when Mukherjee, speaking at a recent public event, responded to a question about dating cricketers by saying that several players had shown interest in her. She specifically mentioned that Suryakumar Yadav “used to message me a lot” in the past, though she added that they were no longer in touch and that she did not want any romantic association.

The comment quickly drew sharp reactions on social media, with many users and fans of the cricketer criticising the remark as unverified and potentially harmful to Yadav’s reputation. In response, social media influencer Faizan Ansari filed a defamation complaint worth Rs. 100 crore against Mukherjee on January 13, 2026, at a police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Ansari, who claims to have a large following online, alleges that her statement was false, damaging, and possibly a publicity stunt. He has urged authorities to register an FIR and pursue strict legal action if her comments are proven baseless.

Mukherjee later sought to clarify her remarks in interviews, saying they were misunderstood and sensationalised, and insisted any past contact with the cricketer was casual and friendly—not romantic. She also suggested her social media account may have been compromised at one point.
