Anup Jalota suggests AR Rahman to convert back to Hindu:
Veteran bhajan singer Anup Jalota has sparked debate after making remarks about Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman’s religious identity and career opportunities. In a recent statement, Jalota suggested that Rahman should consider converting back to Hinduism if he believes his religion is affecting the amount of work he receives in India. Watch the video below:
Jalota claimed that Rahman was originally Hindu and later converted to Islam, after which his career flourished and he achieved global fame. Referring to what he described as Rahman’s interview, Jalota said that if the composer feels he is not getting enough work today because of his faith, then returning to Hinduism could help restore opportunities. Jalota added that this was his personal understanding and advice, and that Rahman should have confidence that work would come once again.
"I Am A Muslim, Studied In A Brahmin School, I Am Proud Of Ramayana," Says A.R. Rahman –
"Music director AR Rahman was originally Hindu and later converted to Islam. After that, he worked extensively, gained fame, and received immense love. But if he still feels that he is not getting enough work in our country because of his religion, then he should consider becoming a Hindu again. He should have the confidence that once he returns to Hinduism, he will start getting work. That is what I understood from his interview. So I strongly suggest that he convert back to Hinduism and see whether he gets work again," said Jalota.

The remarks have drawn strong reactions on social media, with many users criticizing Jalota for linking an artist’s professional success to religion. Several people pointed out that A.R. Rahman’s career spans decades and includes work across languages, regions, and international platforms. They also noted that Rahman continues to be one of India’s most respected and in-demand composers.
Supporters of Rahman emphasized that his success has been driven by talent, discipline, and innovation rather than religious identity. Some also argued that suggesting conversion for professional gain sends a problematic message in a secular country like India, where artists from all backgrounds have contributed to culture and cinema.
A. R. Rahman has not responded publicly to Jalota’s comments so far. Known for keeping a low profile during controversies, Rahman has often spoken in the past about spirituality, humanity, and unity beyond religious boundaries.
