Akshay Kumar, once known as one of Bollywood’s most consistent hit-makers, has hit a rough patch in recent years. With six back-to-back non-hits, the pressure is now mounting as he prepares for his next big release—Housefull 5. As part of a franchise known for delivering good box office numbers, expectations are high. But will it be enough to break the dry spell?

While OMG 2 (2023) was a box office hit, Kumar wasn’t in the lead role. His portrayal of a modern-day messenger of Lord Shiva added value to the franchise, which helped the film, but it wasn’t an Akshay Kumar-led film in the traditional sense. This means his streak of non-hit films as a lead actor technically remains unbroken. His last solo hit was Sooryavanshi in 2021, after which he delivered five back-to-back theatrical disasters.

In the last two years, Kumar’s solo projects like Mission Raniganj and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan turned out to be disasters, both critically and commercially. His recent comedy, Khel Khel Mein (2024), also failed to impress audiences and added to the growing list of box office failures. He then appeared in Sarfira (2024), which was an even bigger flop.

This year’s Sky Force was slightly better, ending its run as a below-average grosser—not a flop, but far from a success. However, Kesari Chapter 2 was well received and emerged as a success, offering a glimmer of hope.

With Housefull 5, Akshay returns to a genre and franchise that has worked well for him in the past. If the film connects with audiences, it could mark a crucial turning point in his career. But if it falters, questions about his box office draw will only grow louder. Housefull 5 has a very high budget and needs at least 350 crore worldwide gross to reach hit status. The advance booking for the film has been dull so far, so let’s see how it fares in the coming days.
