Campeones Review Movie Talkies:

Since Aamir Khan is bringing this story in Hindi with Sitaare Zameen Par this weekend, it's a perfect time for me to revisit my review of Campeones. Here we go. The idea of making this film unique by keeping the ground-level mass elements bound together misses the mark in a few places, but there's nothing bad enough to hate about it.

Campeones

Campeones Story:

The story follows a basketball coach who is sentenced to community service and forced to work with a team of intellectually disabled players. He’s initially not serious about his work but gradually learns to put his soul and passion into it while teaching basketball to the group.

Campeones

The movie is inspired by the Aderes team in Burjassot, which won twelve Spanish championships between 1999 and 2014. These true events give the film a strong foundation, and the director’s use of cinematic liberty turns it into a light and entertaining popcorn flick.

Campeones

Could it have been better? Absolutely—especially in terms of emotional depth. It could have hit harder emotionally, but it misses the mark due to its over-the-top, all-out comedic treatment. You expect to feel sympathy or sadness for the disabled characters, but the film doesn't follow the usual sentimental route. Instead, it keeps you laughing and entertained, which can dull the emotional impact over time. By the climax, the emotional strings feel loose, and the conclusion feels flat.

Campeones Movie Review:

Still, it's a fun, watchable film with enough human-driven moments. Campeones is made more for entertainment than emotional depth. Just keep that in mind before watching. Interestingly, Nitesh Tiwari’s Bollywood hit Chhichhore (2019) borrowed quite a few elements from this movie. The performances are fine and the screenplay is engaging. The cinematography and editing should have been better.

Campeones

Overall, Campeones delivers a humorous and feel-good ride, especially for viewers who enjoy urban or foreign humor. The Hindi remake should improve a few things, especially the adult humor. Let's see how SZP turns out. But frankly, Campeones isn't good enough to warrant a remake.
