Year Ender 2024: How Rohit Shetty's Singham Again Broke the Chain of Hits for the Cop Universe

Singham Again broke Cop-Universe' Hit Chain:

Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty, was released on Diwali 2024 and faced a clash with Anees Bazmee's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Fronted by Ajay Devgn, aka Singham, the film brought together an ensemble cast that included names like Kareena Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff, and others. With such a cast and a huge budget, the least that trade and fans expected was a hit movie, but Rohit Shetty's directorial failed to deliver. Additionally, it lost the box office clash against Kartik Aaryan's BB3, both in verdict and profits.

Singham Again received an "average" verdict from Box Office India, becoming the first film in the cop universe to have a non-hit verdict. All the previous films in the cop universe had been at least hits, but this film broke that chain of hits! Singham Again crossed the Rs. 200 crore nett mark, but that was nowhere near what people expected from the film.

Talking about the previous films in the cop universe, it all began with Singham (2011). This South remake was a super hit at the box office and paved the way for a hyped sequel, Singham Returns (2014). The sequel also became a super hit at the box office but missed the blockbuster tag, which was certainly within its potential. The next film in the cop universe was Simmba (it’s the 5th anniversary today), which became the highest grosser as well as the biggest hit in the franchise. It was followed by Akshay Kumar's Sooryavanshi, which had to wait for one and a half years for its release due to the pandemic. However, it finally kick-started Bollywood's stalled cycle on Diwali 2021. Sooryavanshi became a hit but missed its actual potential due to restricted release and the pandemic's effect on the cinema business.

Singham Again was anticipated as the return of the OG Singham after a long wait of 10 years but couldn't deliver what was expected. An "average" verdict cannot be excused in any way, and breaking the chain of hits for a big cinematic universe was even worse. The hype began to diminish from the trailer release when the entire story and mass elevation scenes were unveiled in the promo. After the release, the actual issues like Singham without aggression and being sidelined by others caused people to lose interest in the film. As a result, we have one of the biggest disappointing films of the year and one of the biggest underperformers.
