Jana Nayagan Sets Record for Largest Ticket Refund:

The highly anticipated Thalapathy Vijay starrer Jana Nayagan has inadvertently set a new record in Indian cinema — not for box office collections, but for the largest ticket refund exercise ever conducted in the industry.

Originally slated for release on January 9, 2026, advance bookings for Jana Nayagan had surged across India and international markets, with global ticket sales reportedly crossing massive figures in pre-sales. However, just two days before its planned theatrical debut, the producers announced an indefinite postponement due to a delay in obtaining a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The issue arose after the Madras High Court reserved its verdict on a petition challenging the CBFC’s hesitation to grant the censor certificate on time, despite the film having been viewed earlier by the board.

The postponement triggered widespread cancellations. Ticketing platforms like BookMyShow began refunding over 450,000 advance tickets, a process regarded as the biggest refund operation in Indian film history. Estimates suggest that refunds worth approximately ₹1 crore (around US$120,000) in India alone have already been processed, with overseas returns potentially raising the total significantly due to high international pre-sales.

Across markets such as the UK and Malaysia, cinemas have also started cancelling shows and initiating refunds, leaving fans disappointed yet understanding of the unforeseen circumstances. The production team has not yet announced a new release date, but ongoing legal and certification developments could determine the film’s eventual launch.
