Disney’s latest sci-fi flick Tron Ares struggled out of the gate at the box office this past weekend. It earned about $33.5 million domestically and $60.5 million globally in its opening weekend. The opening weekend figures in India are disappointing at around 2.5 crore nett in the first 3 days and the film wrap its lifetime business with a single digit total.

The problem is, Tron Ares carries a hefty production budget of $180 million (not including marketing and print costs). To break even, it would need to make many times that amount — possibly $300 million or more, once advertising is counted.

At this start, the path to profit looks extremely steep. Even though it opened at No. 1 in many markets, its box office result is far below projections, which had expected a stronger debut. Trade already call this a “soft start” and warn that unless Tron: Ares has extraordinary staying power in theaters or performs much better overseas, it might lose money for Disney.

Comparing to Tron Legacy (2010) — which had higher box office success against a somewhat lower budget — Ares cannot rely on nostalgia alone. At this rate, it is fair to call Tron: Ares a flop in theatrical terms. The road ahead is uphill, and recovering its massive cost seems unlikely unless there is a major late surge.
