Sajid Nadiadwala 7 CONSECUTIVE NON-HITS With Sikandar?
The post-pandemic period hasn't been favorable for Bollywood, but for Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, it has been even worse. The production house run by Sajid Nadiadwala has produced 6 films in the post-pandemic era, and not a single film has become a box office hit. With Sikandar, they will either end this dry phase or achieve 7 non-hits in a row. Let's take a look at their filmography during the post-pandemic period.
1) Tadap:
An official remake of the Telugu film RX100, starring Ahan Shetty and Tara Sutaria, was released after the reopening of cinemas following the lockdown. The film wasn't expected to perform well at the box office and ultimately emerged as a flop, earning Rs. 25.36 crore nett at the domestic box office.
2) 83:
A few weeks after Tadap, NGE released their ambitious sports drama based on the Indian cricket team's famous victory in the 1983 World Cup. 83, directed by Kabir Khan and starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, was a box office disaster. Made on a budget of Rs. 260 crore, the film collected Rs. 103 crore in India, leaving producers and distributors facing substantial losses.
3) Bachchhan Pandey:
Just 3 months after 83's disastrous run, Sajid Nadiadwala released his next film, Bachchhan Pandey, on Holi 2022. The Akshay Kumar-led action comedy added another disaster to NGE's filmography and also completed their hat-trick of flops.
4) Heropanti 2:
On Eid 2022, Heropanti 2 proved that not all sequels succeed. As a sequel to NGE's box office hit, Heropanti, this movie was an absolute washout from day one. Starring Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria, Heropanti 2 took in just Rs. 24 crore nett at the Indian box office and received a "disaster" verdict.
5) Satyaprem Ki Katha:
NGE took a break of almost a year and then released Sameer Vidwans' Satyaprem Ki Katha in cinemas in June 2023. Led by Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, the film suffered from poor content and low commercial appeal but fared as an average grosser. Interestingly, this film lost a clash against the Marathi movie Baipan Bhari Deva, which made more money in Maharashtra than SPKK made across India.
6) Chandu Champion:
A year later, NGE and Kartik Aaryan's duo returned with Kabir Khan's biographical drama, Chandu Champion. This movie was actually better than their previous debacles but couldn't translate the praise into footfalls. The film made a little over Rs. 53 crore nett and ended up as a flop.
NGE also had one OTT release, Bawaal, featuring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, which also received a poor response. Some international media portals slammed the film for using the Holocaust as a medium for a love story. Since the film was released on OTT, we can't really call it a flop, but had it been released in cinemas, we would have had a verdict to mention.
After six back-to-back non-hits, NGE is now gearing up for their seventh release in the post-pandemic era, Sikandar. The Salman Khan-starrer is releasing this Eid, and the advance ticket sales aren't encouraging. Still, there is time to discuss this, so we should wait until the film has its verdict at the box office in the coming days.
