A major fire broke out early this morning at 5:00 AM on the set of the popular television serial Anupamaa in Film City, Mumbai. The blaze completely destroyed the set, just two hours before the scheduled shoot was to begin at 7:00 AM. Preparations for the day’s filming were already underway when the fire erupted.
At the time of the incident, several workers and crew members were present on the floor. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported yet. However, had the shooting commenced as planned, the situation could have turned catastrophic, potentially resulting in loss of lives.
This incident is yet another tragic reminder of the recurring fire outbreaks in Mumbai and its surrounding film studios. Time and again, fires have engulfed sets due to the blatant negligence of producers, production houses, and television channels, who consistently fail to implement even the most basic fire safety measures. This apathy places the lives of thousands of workers at risk every single day.
While the Anupamaa set was destroyed, it is alarming that several adjoining sets narrowly escaped the flames. This could have led to an even greater disaster.
Suresh Shyamlal Gupta, President of the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA), has issued a strong statement calling upon the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, to order a high-level judicial inquiry into this fire incident.
Mr. Gupta has further demanded the immediate suspension of the Managing Director of Film City and the Labour Commissioner of Mumbai, holding them accountable for their failure to enforce safety regulations. AICWA alleges that due to their collusion and willful negligence, producers are not compelled to adhere to mandatory fire safety protocols, putting thousands of workers’ lives in grave danger.
AICWA has also called for a criminal FIR to be filed against the producers, the production house, the television channel, as well as the Film City Managing Director and Labour Commissioner.
Furthermore, AICWA demands that the investigation must also explore whether the fire was deliberately set by the producers or the channel in order to illegitimately claim insurance — a horrifying possibility that would mean risking lives for financial gain.
It must be thoroughly verified if any worker has lost their life in this tragedy, as AICWA believes such incidents are often intentionally covered up by producers and Film City authorities to avoid public backlash and legal consequences.
Mr. Gupta has also made an urgent appeal to the Chief Minister to conduct a comprehensive fire audit of every film set and studio across Maharashtra. He strongly insists that any producer, production house, or channel found violating fire safety norms should be blacklisted with immediate effect.
The lives of thousands of daily wage workers, technicians, and artists are not expendable. The system must not wait for another disaster to act. AICWA stands firm in its demand for justice, accountability, and safety for every single individual working behind the scenes of India’s entertainment industry.
