“That makes me uncomfortable. While much of the film is cinema and performance, the Daiva element is sensitive and sacred. Wherever I go, I request people not to perform it on stage or mock it. It is emotionally deeply connected to us,” Shetty said, underlining the seriousness of the subject.

He further explained that during the making of Kantara, the team took special care to portray local customs and rituals with honesty and respect. Shetty revealed that extensive research was done, and guidance was taken from people closely connected to these traditions to ensure authenticity. According to him, the Daiva worship shown in the film is not just a cinematic sequence but a belief system that is deeply rooted in the culture of coastal Karnataka.

Shetty also stressed that audiences should try to understand the emotional depth and cultural significance behind such rituals, rather than treating them as a performance meant for entertainment or imitation.

Although he did not name anyone, his remarks come shortly after actor Ranveer Singh faced backlash online for allegedly mimicking the Daiva performance during a recent event. Many social media users criticized the act, calling it disrespectful to a sacred tradition. Rishab Shetty’s statement has since resonated with many, with fans and cultural voices supporting his appeal for sensitivity and respect towards traditions that go beyond cinema and spectacle. He was even trolled for laughing and enjoying this mimicry while Singh was performing it in front of him and the entire crowd at the film festival.
