In a recent interaction with Firstpost, the actress said, “I don’t think I ever wanted to leave Bollywood. I felt limited for many reasons when I was working in Hindi films. I was being pushed into… I was looking for opportunities that felt exciting to me as an artist, and I ended up working in America. After 12 years, I am finding the momentum in choosing work.”

Her remarks echo what she has previously shared at global forums. The actress has admitted that despite being financially secure and professionally stable in India by the early 2010s, she felt her growth had stalled, which prompted her to explore opportunities in the United States.

The Barfi actress has also revealed that her transition was not motivated by glamour but by survival and the need to reinvent herself professionally. She previously stated she was “dealing with a lot” in India and began seeking work in the U.S. during a difficult phase.

The move proved risky. Starting afresh in her 30s in a new industry was something she later described as daunting. However, the gamble paid off when she landed the lead role in the American TV series Quantico, becoming the first South Asian to headline a U.S. network drama.

Now, more than a decade after her international shift, the actor says she finally feels empowered in selecting projects that truly excite her creatively. She will next be seen in SS Rajamouli's Varanasi, led by Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
