In a not so surprising turn of events, the Luv Kush Ramleela Committee in Delhi has decided to drop bold actress-model Poonam Pandey from playing Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, in this year’s Ramleela at Red Fort.

This decision came after months of debate and public objections from political and religious groups. The BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had publicly demanded her removal, arguing that her past controversies made her appear unsuitable for a religious and devotional role. The VHP had raised concerns that her casting could hurt the sentiments of devotees. The public was angry too and was expressing strong reactions on social media platforms.

At a press conference, committee President Arjun Kumar explained that while they initially believed Pandey could portray Mandodari positively, the backlash made them reconsider. He said that they did not want controversy to overshadow the sacred message of Ramleela.  He clarified that the decision was not meant as disrespect to her, but to respect public sentiment.

Earlier, Pandey had expressed her excitement about the role. She even announced plans to observe a nine-day fast during Navratri, to cleanse mind and body and to fit the character. The committee has now said they will choose another artist to play Mandodari this year. The change reflects the power of public opinion in shaping cultural and religious events. The Nasha actress is yet to make a statement on her removal from the show.
