Poonam Pandey in Ramleela:
The Luv Kush Ramleela Committee in Delhi has chosen adult movie actress and model Poonam Pandey to play Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, in the coming Ramleela performance. Mandodari is traditionally portrayed as a symbol of virtue, dignity and devotion.
The decision has sparked widespread objections. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has strongly protested, saying that Poonam Pandey’s public image and past controversies make her unsuitable for such a sacred role. They argue that Ramleela is not just theatre but a religious and cultural event, in which roles should reflect cultural sensitivity and uphold the faith of devotees.

Delhi’s BJP has also weighed in. Leaders have asked the Ramleela committee to reconsider the casting. Praveen Shankar Kapoor, senior vice-president of the Luv Kush Ramleela Committee, wrote that Pandey is “known primarily for spreading obscenity and vulgarity on social media.” They feel that selecting her could hurt the dignity of the Ramleela.
Poonam Pandey’s background shows she started as a model and gained fame through bold photoshoots and social media presence. She also made her film debut in Nasha (2013) and has been involved in several controversies—including a publicised social media stunt where she faked her death to raise awareness about cervical cancer, which received backlash. People are reacting strongly against this choice on social media platforms.

Organisers so far have defended their choice, saying everyone deserves a chance and the role of Mandodari is important and needs to be done well. But many devotees and religious groups believe cultural and moral expectations should matter as much as acting skills. The issue remains unresolved.
