In the letter addressed to the Prime Minister, FWICE—representing 36 affiliated film, television and digital-industry associations—describes Shah as “one of India’s most beloved and distinguished actors”.  It adds that he was “a rare and gifted artist whose work brought joy, laughter and emotion to millions across the nation”.

The organisation highlighted Shah’s long and versatile career in both film and television, mentioning landmark works such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Main Hoon Na among his many memorable performances. According to FWICE, his kindness, support for fellow artists and technicians, and contributions behind the scenes made him well-respected across the industry.

Shah passed away on October 25, 2025, aged 74, leaving a profound emotional void in the entertainment world. In their appeal, FWICE say that awarding the Padma Shri to him now would be “a most fitting tribute to a life devoted to art, culture and service through entertainment”.

Whether the honour is conferred will depend on the government’s decision-making. But the letter reflects a strong desire from the film community to see Shah’s legacy officially recognised at the national level. We believe he should get it.
