Karan Johar Seeks Protection of Personality Rights:
Filmmaker Karan Johar has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights and a restraint on individuals and online platforms from misusing his name, images, and identity for commercial purposes. Johar, one of Bollywood’s biggest producers and directors, moved the court after instances emerged of unauthorised merchandise and content being sold in his name without consent.
After Aishwarya Rai, Now Abhishek Bachchan Seeks Protection of Personality Rights from Delhi High Court
The case comes close on the heels of similar orders passed in favour of actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court granted interim relief to the couple, restraining several websites and online platforms from commercially exploiting their names, photographs, and other personality attributes.
In its September 10 order in Abhishek Bachchan’s case, the High Court observed that the attributes of his persona—including name, image, and signature—were being misused by websites and platforms, even through technological tools such as artificial intelligence.
Justice Tejas Karia noted, “These attributes are linked to the plaintiff's professional work and associations in the course of his career. The unauthorised use of such attributes has the effect of diluting the goodwill and reputation associated with him.”
Earlier, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also secured a similar protection, with the court recognising the risk of reputation damage and loss of goodwill caused by the unapproved use of her identity.
Johar’s plea is expected to be taken up soon. The case could further expand the growing judicial recognition of celebrity personality rights in India, particularly against online misuse and AI-driven exploitation. More celebrities are likely to folleis the same.
