Filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up about the journey of Homebound making it to the Oscars shortlist and the massive effort behind its international campaign. In a candid chat with PeepingMoon, Karan revealed how his business partner, Adar Poonawalla, fully backed the film’s Oscar push without worrying about the costs involved.

Karan shared that when discussions around an Oscar campaign began, he was upfront about how expensive and uncertain the process could be. He explained that campaigning for the Academy Awards often turns into a “bottomless pit,” with no guarantee of even reaching the shortlist, let alone securing a nomination. According to him, making it to the top 15 and then the final five is an extremely challenging uphill task.

However, Adar Poonawalla saw the situation differently. Karan revealed that Adar did not view the Oscar campaign as a financial risk, but as a rare opportunity for a deserving film to be seen on a global stage. He was clear that profit and loss should not dictate the decision.

Explaining the scale of the campaign, Karan said that an Oscar push involves hiring international publicists, extensive travel, building buzz, engaging with global media, and organizing multiple screenings overseas. Despite knowing how demanding the process would be, Adar encouraged the team to give it their all. He reportedly told Karan to focus on passion rather than monetary returns and to do everything within their capacity for the film.

Karan emphasized that Homebound was never meant to be a money-making venture. Instead, it was always a passion project aimed at building credibility. While other films may be made for commercial survival, Homebound stood apart as a film driven purely by creative belief.
