Rishab Shetty’s much-awaited prequel, Kantara Chapter 1, has finally hit the screens, and its opening day numbers have set the tone for an exciting run ahead, despite slightly underwhelming response. The film managed to collect around ₹17–17.5 crore nett from its Hindi dubbed version on Day 1, thanks to the Dussehra holiday which gave it a solid push at the box office. The real-value numbers would have been around 10-11 crore, but given the clash, it was a decent number.

Across India, the film’s overall opening collections are estimated to be in the range of ₹55–60 crore nett, making it the second biggest opening ever for a Kannada film after KGF Chapter 2. This performance clearly shows the rising pan-India appeal of Kannada cinema and Rishab Shetty’s growing star power. However, KGF 2 remains on top by a huge distance.

Interestingly, the first Kantara (2022) had opened on a very modest note with just ₹1.5 crore nett on its debut day, before becoming a massive word-of-mouth blockbuster. In comparison, the prequel has registered almost 12 times higher collections on its very first day, which is an impressive leap.

However, expectations were sky-high after the success of the original. Trade experts had predicted that the film might open in the ₹25–30 crore nett range in Hindi, which hasn’t materialized. While the numbers are strong, they fall short of those ambitious predictions.

Still, with a long weekend ahead and positive audience feedback for its performances and gripping climax, Kantara Chapter 1 is well-placed to grow further in the coming days. The real test will be its hold at the box office after the holiday period. This will be a SUCCESS for sure but won't be a huge blockbuster like some of recent south films.
