Kamal Haasan controversy on Kannada Language:
Indian actor and politician Kamal Haasan has found himself at the center of a linguistic controversy after a recent statement perceived as dismissive toward the Kannada language triggered strong reactions across Karnataka. The comments, made during a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life, have sparked outrage among local groups and social media users alike.
Thug Life: "Many people forget that cinema is the most democratic art ever," says Kamal Haasan
During the event, Haasan allegedly remarked that "Kannada is born out of Tamil," a comment many have labeled disrespectful. While some supporters argue the actor was speaking in a broader cinematic context, critics believe his statement undermines the cultural and linguistic pride of the Kannada-speaking population. "My life and my family are Tamil language. Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That's why he is here. When I started my speech, I said, 'my life and my family are Tamil.' Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line," said the Indian 2 actor.
"The Kannada language and its speakers deserve respect. Comments like these hurt our sentiments and cannot be tolerated," said a representative from a prominent Kannada advocacy group. As of now, Kamal Haasan has not issued an official statement addressing the backlash. The producers of Thug Life have also remained silent, further fueling public dissatisfaction.
With tensions rising, it remains to be seen how the controversy will impact the film's release and Haasan’s public image in Karnataka. Netizens are demanding a ban on his film in Karnataka. Some have torn the posters of his film and stated that they will blacken his face for disrespecting the Kannada language. Will Kamal Haasan issue an apology for this?
