Kamal Haasan
Indian actor Kamal Haasan is in legal trouble once again. The Bengaluru city court, in an ex-parte interim injunction passed on 4 July 2025, has formally restrained the Thug Life actor from making any statements that could defame or disparage the Kannada language, literature, land, or culture.
The order came in response to a civil suit filed by the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, led by president Mahesh Joshi. The suit challenges Haasan’s recent claim at the Thug Life audio launch in Chennai, where he stated that “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” This remark triggered a wave of backlash from pro-Kannada groups and cultural organisations.
The Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge ruled that, until the next hearing on 30 August, Kamal Haasan is prohibited from issuing any public statements implying the linguistic superiority of Tamil over Kannada, says a report in PTI. A legal summons has also been served to Haasan for appearance at the hearing.
Kamal Haasan's Controversial Remark on Kannada Language Sparks Backlash; Locals Demand Ban on Thug Life –
This dispute began in May 2025, when the remark prompted the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to block the release of Thug Life in the state. Despite the Supreme Court later ruling that an apology could not be forced and mob pressure shouldn't decide film releases, tensions remained high and it affected the film.
Kannada speakers say that Kannada, though part of the Dravidian family, developed independently and is not derived from Tamil. The next court hearing on 30 August is expected to determine the final verdict. Meanwhile, Thug Life has released on OTT after its disastrous performance at the box office in June 2025.
