Hotstar AI Mahabharat becomes a laughing stock:
The AI-driven adaptation of the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharat, released on the JioHotstar platform, has stumbled badly despite a grand vision. The makers promised “the same story in a new way”, blending the timeless epic with modern artificial-intelligence-powered visuals to appeal to younger audiences, but reality is that they have made a joke of the legendary epic.

People had expectations but after the launch, many viewers were disappointed. Critics pointed out major flaws: stiff characters, odd facial expressions, lip-sync problems and visuals that lacked emotional depth. One review said the trailer “left viewers upset… poor lip-sync, missing audio clarity and awkward visuals.” Given that the Mahabharata is full of deep human emotion, sacrifice, conflict and moral struggle, the very human core seemed lost. The technology-first approach apparently couldn’t capture the “soul or intensity that the Mahabharata deserves.” In one scene, a modern table and bed are seen in the background, leaving audiences in splits.
The backlash also stems from comparison with earlier, loved versions of the epic — for example the 2013–14 Star Plus Mahabharat — which were praised for strong performances and high production values. Viewers felt the new show lacked authenticity and emotional pull. While the intention to use AI and visual effects was ambitious, the execution shows that big myths may not easily translate into AI-first storytelling. In the end, the series appears to have become more of a tech experiment than a moving epic revival.
