The visit drew sharp criticism from Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat. The cleric issued a fatwa against Bharuccha, calling her temple participation a “grave sin” (Gunah-e-Azeem) under his interpretation of Sharia law. He stated that a practising Muslim should not take part in idol worship or religious rituals of another faith, and urged the actress to repent, perform istighfar, and recite the Kalma to atone for what he described as a violation of Islamic principles.
