Directed by Anurag Basu, the film had a budget of around ₹50 crore and went on to collect ₹105 crore in India and ₹174 crore worldwide. Declared a Super Hit, it also cemented its place as a modern-day classic.

The story of Barfi was heartwarming and different, telling the tale of a deaf and mute boy, played brilliantly by Ranbir Kapoor. At the time, Ranbir was already considered a strong performer after films like Rocket Singh, Raajneeti, and Rockstar. But Barfi! took his career to another level. Playing a character without dialogues, he relied completely on expressions, body language, and emotions. This was a bold move for a mainstream actor known for his charming, romantic image, and Ranbir delivered one of the best performances of his career.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas too stunned audiences with her role as Jhilmil, an autistic woman. Many consider it her career-best performance. It showed her depth as an actor and earned her tremendous respect. Ileana D’Cruz, in her Bollywood debut, played a relatively simple character, but her sincerity and natural screen presence made the role memorable.

Anurag Basu’s direction was top-notch, weaving together emotion, humor, and sensitivity with great finesse. Barfi remains his most celebrated film to date. The music also played a huge role in the film’s success, with melodies that continue to be loved.
