RATING – 3/5*

Shikar (1968) Review Movie Talkies:

Shikar has a rather strange script for a Bollywood thriller, where the heroine is portrayed as both the killer and innocent at the same time. That’s quite a lot to carry for a project led by a superstar, and even convincing Dharmendra and Asha Parekh to take up such a concept must have been a task. Still, be assured that the film offers thrills, enough suspense, romance, drama, an iconic song, and a fair amount of entertainment.

Shikar

The comic entertainment factor is handled almost single-handedly by Johnny Walker, and his recurring “…ke saath kaam kiya hu” phrases come across as both interesting and funny. Dharmendra plays a forest officer who finds Asha Parekh wounded one night. However, before he can return to his house with help, she mysteriously disappears, leaving no trace behind. The very same night, his friend is murdered, and he begins to suspect that the mysterious girl and the murder might somehow be connected.

Sanjeev Kumar, playing the investigating cop, believes that there was no girl at all, while Dharmendra thinks there might actually be two girls with the same face. As the story progresses, they fall in love, and he eventually realises that the girl he met was innocent. But then, who is the real killer? The climax, after so many twists and turns, finally reveals the truth.

Shikar

Dharmendra looks dashing as always and performs well in his role. He gets to balance both romance and action—two things audiences loved seeing him do. Asha Parekh’s Parde Mein Rehne Do will remain iconic forever. The song, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan and sung by Asha Bhosle, has become a part of film history and continues to remain a classic.

Shikar

Sanjeev Kumar, Helen, Johnny Walker, Rehman, Manmohan, and Bela Bose are impressive in supporting roles. Overall, Shikar feels a little long. While a two-and-a-half-hour runtime was quite standard back then, for a murder mystery it does feel slightly overlong. Still, Atma Ram manages to craft an engaging film with entertainment done right, which is why the lengthy runtime doesn’t bother much. The suspense reveal in the climax is definitely one of the better ones for its time.
