Top 5 Best Female Performances in 2024

2024 was surprising for me when I reflected on the performances of female actors. I really wanted to include Tabu for her simple role in Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, but the screen time wasn't sufficient. Parineeti Chopra was truly surprising in Chamkila, but unfortunately, my list does not include OTT movies. So, here's a look at the Top 5 BEST PERFORMANCES by female actors in Bollywood films in 2024:

5) Katrina Kaif in Merry Christmas:

This is a surprise for me as well. Katrina was so natural with her voice, body language, and expressions as a single mother, despite the film being quite boring most of the time. I'd like to see Kat embrace this natural flow more often, but she may then lose that commercial heroine tag. That's unlikely to happen, and that's why Merry Christmas has to be one of her best performances in recent times or throughout her career.

4) Alia Bhatt in Jigra:

It doesn't matter how the film turned out; many watched it because of Alia Bhatt, as she has been excelling in female-led films like Darlings and Raazi. This wasn't at that level, but it offered something new for her and her fans. We don't often see actresses take on roles resembling the angry young man type, but Alia did so here. The emotional depth was somewhat lacking in her performance, but overall, it was a fine portrayal.

3) Ahilya Bamroo in I Want to Talk:

I Want To Talk is led by a man, but the biggest surprise package in the film is this young girl, Ahilya, who plays Abhishek Bachchan's daughter. This story reflects the lives of many NRI girls who struggle with their guardians during their teenage years when they want to enjoy life and rebel. However, it only takes a moment to realize what maturity means. Ahilya's character navigates this phase, making her role meaningful. Shoojit chose a new face, and Bamroo fulfilled all the criteria with her flawless performance.

2) Yami Gautam in Article 370:

The entire film on one side, and that one monologue by Yami Gautam on the other. Yami screams out about the system's failure and hits the table in aggression. The frustration on her face reflects her capabilities as an "actor." That monologue alone is enough to earn her many awards, if not for the entire film. But she was incredibly good in the system-driven film that became the first hit of 2024, and rightly so.

1) Janki Bodiwala in Shaitaan:

Only those who have seen Janaki's outstanding performance in Vash would understand why Shaitaan was underwhelming by her own standards. Due to the lack of strong competition, Janaki Bodiwala's heart-wrenching act in this brutal horror flick stands out as the best leading actress performance in 2024. And I must add, with or without competition, this is the best Bollywood debut for any female actor this year or in the recent past.
