With 'Jazbaa', Sanjay Gupta Fulfills His Dream Of Directing Shabana Azmi

Jazbaa features Shabana Azmi in a key role. However, it was way back in 2007 when Sanjay Gupta had first collaborated with the lady. The film in question was Dus Kahaniyaan for which the actress was roped in for one of the short stories - Rice Plate. However, even though Sanjay had directed as many as five out of ten stories, it was Rohit Roy who called the shots for Rice Plate which featured powerhouse performers Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah.

"Back then, Sanjay Gupta was giving an opportunity to many upcoming filmmakers to direct a film for his production house," informs our source, "Though he had two of his favorite actors coming on the scene, he had to resist the temptation for directing them since Rohit was committed to make the short film with them. Sanjay went on to direct his other five stories but the dream of seeing the legendary actors in front of his camera was left unfulfilled."

No wonder, Sanjay always had in mind to find a good role for them whenever he could for a film of his.

"This is where Jazbaa came in," the source adds, "There is a strong part for a middle aged female protagonist in the film and Sanjay instantly thought of Shabana Azmi. The role is quite powerful and warrants the presence of a strong performer. When Shabana Azmi heard about it, she was game to step in as well."

It turned out to be a win-win situation for all as Sanjay finally managed to gain an opportunity to work with her.

"Of course it was wonderful," says Gupta, "She is someone who does select films and I am glad that she chose Jazbaa."
