Fighter, produced by Viacom18 Studios, was released with high expectations but couldn't perform well at the box office. The Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer was the first big release of 2024 and failed to emerge as a box office hit. Here’s a look at why it was the biggest underperformer of the year. 

Siddharth Anand booked Republic Day weekend for Fighter's release—just like Pathaan, which emerged as a huge blockbuster on the same date last year. However, Anand failed to replicate the same success; in fact, he didn’t even achieve half of that success with the aerial action drama. Led by Hrithik Roshan, the film was predicted to be the first blockbuster of the year, but reality had other plans.

The movie opened to decent numbers of ₹20 crore nett, while Pathaan opened at ₹55 crore on the same date a year ago. The direct comparison may be unfair, but Viacom's production was expected to achieve at least 60% of that business. The actual numbers did not only disappoint the trade but also the makers and everyone involved in the project.

Made on a budget of approximately ₹300 crore (various sources have different figures), the film collected approximately ₹200 crore nett at the domestic box office and received an "Average" verdict. It fell short of expectations by a significant margin. It was a solo release, had a free run, and garnered critical acclaim too (you know how), yet it failed to reach the Hit verdict, let alone Super Hit or Blockbuster, as predicted before the release. That makes it the biggest underperformer of the year, ahead of Singham Again, which faced a clash.

Forget the box office for a moment; it failed to deliver the content audiences expected. Touted to be the first of its kind aerial action flick, Fighter didn't connect with the audience. It was an average/mediocre project but was exaggerated by the marketing team to see poor results. It also became a case study for others. 2024 hasn’t been good enough, and somehow Fighter was the pioneer of this trend in early 2024.
