The COVID-19 pandemic has engulfed the planet and Indians are under lockdown since the past two months. Owing to the growing uncertainty that has come along with Coronavirus, many filmmakers have decided to release their movies on OTT and Gulabo Sitabo will be the first big Bollywood movie to release on a digital platform. The film will premiere on Amazon Prime and the trailer of the Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer was unveiled today.
The film revolves around an elderly man Mirza (Big B), who is the owner of a debilitated haveli and his poor tenant Baankey, played by Ayushmann Khurrana. There is no love lost between the two and they often get into war of words.
Mirza wants to get rid of his sly tenant however, Baankey refuses to budge. Mirza then decides to sell off his house but is soon told that his haveli is an archaelogically important site and can’t be sold, much to Bankey’s relief. Who wins this game of one-upmanship forms the rest of the plot.
Big B is outstanding as Mirza and has sported a brand new look in the quirky comedy. Even at 77, the actor is refusing to slow down and experiment. He never fails to entertain his fans and has hit it out of the park once again. This is his first film with Ayushmann and their constant bickering is a treat for cinelovers. Ayushmann is fantastic and has held his own against the mahanayak.
The milieu is perfect and Shoojit Sarkar’s direction lends a lot of authenticity to this Tom and Jerry-style slice-of-life quirky comedy. The subject is unique and the actors have successfully lifted the movie on their able shoulders.
The movie will premiere on Amazon Prime on June 12.
