Bollywood overseas grossers: Bollywood's overseas market has seen new heights in every generation. In the 1950s, Aan and Raj Kapoor movies received wide releases and did a huge business in NRI markets. The Soviet Union and China opened late but had massive potential. In the 1990s, most of our films relied on traditional international markets like the US, UAE, Gulf, Australia, and New Zealand, and it remains same to date.
Shah Rukh Khan took a leap ahead with markets like Germany, Peru, South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia. Then, in the last decade, Aamir Khan did wonders in Asian markets such as China, Turkey, Japan, and Korea. But not all films do such huge business in those markets, and after Covid wave, China has become difficult for Indian movies.
The first phase of release is mostly considered for overseas verdicts, unless some film does unbelievable business in some non-traditional market. The first-phase blockbusters bow down to Shah Rukh Khan, as the count is far too high for him compared to others. With Pathaan and Jawan, he made $40 million and $45 million possible in the first phase.
