Year 2015 was mired with controversies and here is a list of top ten Bollywood controversies that took the country by storm:
1. Aamir Khan On Intolerance:Aamir Khan courted controversy when he stated, at an event, that he is concerned about growing intolerance in India and that his wife Kiran Rao is very concerned about their son's safety and has thus suggested that they should move out of the country. Aamir received a lot of flak for his comment and post his intolerance remark, Rajeev Tandon, Punjab Chairman of Shiv Sena, had announced that he would give a reward of Rs. 1 lakh to anyone who would slap the superstar.
2. Salman Khan-Yakub Memon Controversy:Salman Khan received a lot of brickbats when he tweeted in support of 1993 Bombay Bomb Blast convict Yakub Memon, who was hanged on July 30. Salman faced criticism from all and sundry and even his dad Salim Khan came down heavily on him. Sallu later deleted his tweets and apologized for his comments.
3. Radhika Apte: In April this year, a video featuring a semi-nude Radhika Apte went viral. Later it was learnt that the clip was a part of Anurag Kashyap’s short film, which he had shot for international market. Kashyap then approached the Mumbai Police Commissioner, who has asked the elite Cyber Crime Cell to look into the incident.
4. Arjun Kapoor-Ranveer Singh AIB Roast:Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor got roasted by team All India Backchod on a show that was hosted by Karan Johar. From Ranveer and Arjun’s personal and professional lives to Karan Johar’s sexuality, mean jokes were passed on almost everything. They also took digs at Sonakshi Sinha, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, along with veteran actresses Reema Lagoo and Farida Jalal. Aamir Khan got very upset with the video and Salman Khan too was miffed with it as the roasters had made fun of his sister Arpita Khan. As the video was full of explicit jokes, the makers were forced to pull it down.
5. Aishwarya's racist Ad:Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was slammed for appearing on a racist advertisement for Kalyan Jewellers. The ad showed Ash decked in jewellery along with a dark, emaciated child, who was seen holding an oversized umbrella over her head. Ash said that the final layout was changed by the creative team and Kalyan Jewellers later apologized for hurting the sentiments of many and withdrew the campaign.
6. Sooraj Pancholi: The CBI recently submitted a charge sheet to a Sessions Court in Mumbai and like the Juhu police, they too have charged actor Sooraj Pancholi, Jiah’s boyfriend at the time of her death, with abetting her suicide. The CBI disclosed horrifying details in the charge sheet about Jiah’s abortion. Jiah got pregnant during their relationship and she took a pill to abort the foetus however, she started hemorrhaging as the foetus got aborted but not expelled from her body. According to the charge sheet Sooraj then extricated the foetus himself and disposed it in the toilet. Jiah Khan was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her Juhu residence on June 3, 2013.
7. Maggi Controversy: After popular instant noodle brand Maggi came under scrutiny for containing high content of lead and monosodium glutamate, a court in Bihar directed the local police to register an FIR against Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit andPreity Zinta for endorsing the product and misleading their fans. The noodles got banned for some time but now sales have resumed.
8. Sanskari Censor Board: The Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) received a lot of flak for being too sanskari after they chopped off two cuss words and shortened the kissing scenes from Daniel Craig starrer Spectre, as they found it too long for the Indian audiences.
9. Anushka Sharma: When Virat Kohli performed poorly during the World Cup 2015, his girlfriend Anushka Sharma was blamed for it. Anushka also received some major flak when she wrote former President, late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's name incorrectly while offering her condolences on Twitter, after he passed away.
10. FTII ANd Its Chairman: After the Information & Broadcast Ministry appointed television actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as Chairman of Pune's Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), students of the premier film education centre, went on an indefinite strike opposing his appointment. Many filmmakers including Dibakar Banerjee announced their decision to return their National Awards over Gajendra’s appointment.
