What is the character you are portraying in the film 'The Stoneman Murders'?
I play the role of a police inspector in this film. I investigate all the murders that take place in this film and he is extremely dedicated cop for whom every single person is a suspect. He is basically a very dedicated and focused cop.
Did you do some research or underwent some training to adapt yourself in this character?
Fortunately all this detailed work was done by our writer director, Manish Gupta. I spent a lot of time with Manish and he imparted me with all kinds of information important for my character to be understood well. As an actor if someone has explained the role and character to you so well as to what would be the look, the body language, the dialect then we eliminate the trail and error and we finally come directly to one particular decision.
Had you ever heard of this man called Stoneman before?
Yes of course. I was in school in 1983 when all these incidents were taking place. We had heard about the 'patthar maar' through our elders, friends and of course newspapers. In childhood we of course were a bit scared about this matter. Unlike Hollywood, in India we do not make too many films on real life incidents and when I came to know we are making a film on this incident I really was excited about the fact and happy to know that Manish had done a detailed work and research on the subject. The film definitely has a mix of drama and reality which will probe a lot of question marks in every one's mind.
Is the movie going to show exactly the same what happened in real life or there is going to be some add ons from the director?
In reality from my knowledge, the stoneman was never caught. There were suspects but no proper evidence to say and claim that was is the killer. In our film the writer director has taken a bit of a liberty to say like there has been a cover up and that the actual killer was caught but there was a reason that it was never out in the open. So, one need to watch the film to understand what's it like.
Is it difficult to work in a realistic film?
I think it's more easy as you can relate to the situation as you have heard, seen and felt about it. They become easy to understand and interpret. It is yet challenging to play the character. You have to exactly portray yourself like him but if it's a fictitious character then it is easier to portray.
What is this film trying to preach?
This is not a message oriented film but it does have a very subtle message. It has an underline message which a person will come to know once they watch the film.
How was it to shoot in the nights?
We have shot the film in the night as the permissions that we got was for only night. So we used to start shooting at 12 midnight till sunrise and these were the only tough parts in the film.
How was it working with Kay Kay and Manish Gupta?
Kay Kay is a brilliant actor. I really loved working with him and he is so focused and dedicated and he has done a brilliant job in this film. I think it is one of his best performances. As far as Manish is concerned, he is a hard task master. He is very detailed in his work and works very hard. He conducts a deep study about his subject and as this film needed a good research as it's a realistic film, so he was well prepared with all minor details needed to make this film. He is involved in his work too much as for him work is the only priority. He has a bright future ahead.
Being a suspense thriller film, did you ever get scared while shooting any scenes?
We shot one scene in Sion subway and that was a very interesting scene. The whole atmosphere was very scary. If you watch the film you would understand what I am talking about.
