Vivek Agnihotri’s latest film The Bengal Files has had a slow start at the box office. Starring Dashan Kumaar, Simrat Kaur, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, and Pallavi Joshi, the film was expected to create strong impact after the massive success of The Kashmir Files. However, the numbers so far are quite underwhelming.

On its opening day, the film managed to collect only around ₹1.35 crore nett. Saturday showed a slight jump with collections of ₹1.85 crore nett, followed by Sunday which brought in about ₹2.25 crore nett. This took the first weekend total to approximately ₹5.50 crore nett, which is far below expectations.

For comparison, The Kashmir Files in 2022 had surprised everyone by crossing the ₹245 crore nett mark in India. It also had a strong weekend of around ₹26 crore nett with solid jump on Saturday and Sunday. That film became a nationwide sensation, sparking huge discussions and running for weeks in cinemas. In contrast, The Bengal Files seems to be struggling to pull audiences to theatres.

The film has also faced a ban in West Bengal, which is considered one of its most important circuits. While many believe that a release in Bengal could have improved its numbers, we feel that it may not have been enough to change the film’s overall fate since Bengal is not a big market to make that kind of difference in the numbers. The coming weekdays will be crucial in deciding if the film can recover ground or fade quickly.
