Things have indeed changed over the three decades gone by. If Deepti Naval was happy playing a saree clad Ms. Chamko in Sai Paranjpe's Chashme Buddoor, newbie Taapsee Pannu has gone cute-n-sexy while being a hottie next door in David Dhawan's version. No, there aren't any seductive expressions on display here but as a girl who isn't quite being a damsel in distress but yet manages to get guys rolling on her fingers, Taapsee has apparently managed to play the balancing game well.

"Well, that was required", acknowledges Taapsee, "You tell me something; way back in 1981, Deepti Naval was a girl next door in a saree but today, the very concept of 'saree' and 'salwar-kameez' has diminished. So the kind of look that I am donning is subdued hot. I am not even becoming a glam Diva here since the character is someone who is a lot younger. Of course when I work in my films down South, I am considered to be someone with a glamorous image. However what is glam there is a next door look in Bollywood. That's the difference in point of view that comes in.”

She is happy that based on the reactions so far, she has managed to form a connect with the audience.

"That's the perfect image which I wanted", she says, "While I wanted to play a girl whom audience could relate to, at the same time I didn't want to come across as someone jisko dekh kar log bolen ki yaar yeh toh kuch zyaada hi normal ho gayi. It is as simple as that; if someone is spending Rs. 150-200 on my film then they should not say ki aisi ladki toh hum roz chalte firte waise hi dekh lete hain. This is why even though the role is normal, the look is not."

Now that indeed makes sense Taapsee.
