SS Rajamouli On Varanasi:

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli has confirmed that a significant portion of his highly anticipated next film Varanasi will delve deeply into Indian mythology, including an episode drawn directly from the Ramayana. According to an interview Rajamouli gave to Polygon, the director revealed that about 25 minutes of the movie will be set in a mythological period, marking one of the most ambitious uses of an epic in his storytelling to date.

Speaking with Polygon, Rajamouli explained that Varanasi will not just blend action and science fiction — it will actually stage a segment inspired by the ancient Hindu epic. “About 25 minutes of the film will be set in the mythological period… that’s as much as I can tell you right now,” he said, adding that this sequence offers him “a chance to actually take an actual episode from the Ramayana itself and present it this way.”

The acclaimed director, known globally for Baahubali and RRR, said that relationships within Varanasi — especially the emotional core between a father and son — drive the film as much as its mythic elements do. He also highlighted the dynamic with lead characters Rudra (played by Mahesh Babu) and Mandakini (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) as central to the story.
