Son of Sardaar 2 Faces Screen Crunch; Postponement Gone Wrong –

Ajay Devgn’s comedy sequel Son of Sardaar 2, featuring Mrunal Thakur as the new female lead, is encountering a major hurdle even before its August 1, 2025 theatrical release. The film, expected to release across approximately 3,500 screens, is struggling to secure sufficient show slots—especially in single-screen cinemas and non-national multiplex chains.

Exhibitors reportedly are unwilling to allocate more than 35% of their daily shows to the Devgn starrer, with some single screens agreeing to only two shows per day at best. The film was originally scheduled to be released on July 25, but the makers postponed it by a week to avoid competition with Saiyaara, which is doing phenomenal business. However, despite this postponement, the film is struggling now. What's the use of postponement then?

This hold-up comes as other films like Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha continue to dominate box office space, which exhibitors seem keen to sustain. The squeeze on screens has already irked PVR-Inox, while the producers and distributors are pushing hard to negotiate more slots—a fight that appears to be escalating behind closed doors. As per a report in Pinkvilla, the exhibitors are willing to allot only 35% of shows at their properties, which won't be enough for this film since it has a moderate to big budget.

With Son of Sardaar 2 poised for a direct clash with Dhadak 2, the window to secure a strong opening is narrowing fast. Trade sources indicate that the early distribution issues may dent its initial run, as word-of-mouth and daytime shows are often key to a big Bollywood launch. Industry insiders warn that limited exposure at single-screen theatres—which still contribute heavily to mass-market ticket sales—could hurt the film’s performance in smaller cities and towns. The early projections predict a 5-6 crore nett opening for this sequel, which is extremely underwhelming, as Son of Sardaar (2012) opened to over 9 crore nett with almost half the ticket prices.
