Sholay at 50: Restored 4K version of Dharmendra-Amitabh Bachchan's legendary blockbuster to premiere at the Toronto Film festival –

Sholay 4K version at TIFF:

The legendary Bollywood classic Sholay is all set to mark its golden jubilee with a grand celebration. Starring Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, and Amjad Khan, the film will complete 50 years of its legacy on 15th August 2025. To commemorate the milestone, a newly restored 4K version of the blockbuster will premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, 2025.

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Sholay is regarded as one of the greatest Indian films ever made. Known for its iconic dialogues, unforgettable characters, and gripping storyline, it has remained a cultural phenomenon for generations. The restoration project has been undertaken by the Film Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Sippy Films Pvt. Ltd., aiming to preserve the film in its best possible form for future audiences.

Sharing his thoughts on the restoration, Amitabh Bachchan expressed deep nostalgia. He said, “Some things in life remain permanently etched in your mind. Sholay is one such film. Shooting for the film was an unforgettable experience, but at the time I had no idea that it would be a watershed for Indian cinema. Its dramatic change in fortunes from being declared an unsuccessful venture, to its record-breaking box office run was an emotional rollercoaster for all of us. It’s wonderful that the Film Heritage Foundation has restored Sholay and that they have managed to locate and include the original ending as well as some deleted scenes in the restoration. I hope that even 50 years later, the film will capture the imagination of new audiences across the world.”
