When T S Nagabharana claimed that Shah Rukh Khan's Swades was a copy of his film, that's why didn't win National Award; VIDEO –
In an old interview, Kannada film maker T S Nagabharana had claimed that Shah Rukh Khan's Swades was a copy of his film and that's why it didn't win National Award (Movie Talkies).
Veteran Kannada filmmaker T S Nagabharana had made a startling revelation in an old interview that has resurfaced online, claiming that Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades was heavily inspired—almost replicated—from his own film, which he shot in 2002 and released in 2003. Watch the video below:
"I was getting feedback from Mumbai that there is some film called Swades. On 17 December 2004, when the film released, I was shocked to see it was, in a way, a replica of my film," Nagabharana said. He further revealed that he attempted to reach out to Gowariker and the producers, but received no response.
"When I asked my producer, he said don’t go for legal action because it is also a film, let everybody enjoy that. That is the generosity of South Indian filmmakers,” he added, explaining why he chose to remain silent at the time.
#Swades was copy of my film that's why didn't win National award, says #TSNagabharana
"Swades was a replica of my film i shot in 2002. I told #NationalAwards jury members thatit is a remake of my film, you can compare. That’s how #Page3 got the award" pic.twitter.com/TGsNQRpsI6
Nagabharana also opened up about Swades's omission from the National Awards. "I was in the jury when Sudhir Mishra was the chairman. Swades came for consideration and I was annoyed. I told the other jury members that it’s a remake of my film. When I showed them my film, they asked why I didn’t sue. I told them I don’t want halla gulla, I am a filmmaker."
Ultimately, Page 3 was chosen over Swades for the prestigious Best FilmAward at the National Film Awards that year. Nagabharana’s claims have reignited conversations around copyright and credit terms but recently there have been discussions about National Awards snubbing Shah Rukh Khan for Swades, so it's the right time to look back at these claims.
