Veteran actress Sandhya Shantaram, renowned for her iconic roles in both Hindi and Marathi cinema, passed away on October 4, 2025, at the age of 89. Born Vijaya Deshmukh on September 16, 1938, in Kochi, Kerala, she made a significant mark in the film industry, particularly through her collaborations with her husband, the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram.

Sandhya's career began in the early 1950s, debuting in the Marathi masterpiece Amar Bhoopali (1951). She gained widespread acclaim for her performances in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), and Navrang (1959), showcasing her exceptional acting and classical dance skills. Her portrayal in Pinjra (1972) further solidified her status, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in Marathi cinema. Pinjra is seen as a landmark in Marathi cinema, both critically and commercially.
Beyond her film career, Sandhya was known for her dedication to the craft, often undergoing rigorous training to perfect her performances. Her legacy continues to inspire, and her contributions to Indian cinema remain celebrated. Her last rites were performed at Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai, where she had spent much of her life.
