Rishab Shetty, who made waves across India with his 2022 blockbuster Kantara, recently opened up about the growing reach of Kannada films in the Hindi market. In a group media interaction, the actor-director reflected on how regional cinema, particularly from the South, has been finding wider acceptance among Hindi-speaking audiences.

When Kantara released in Hindi, it surprised many with its phenomenal performance. The film opened at just around ₹1 crore on its first day, but thanks to strong word of mouth and a loyal audience, it went on to have a long theatrical run. By the end of its journey, the Hindi version collected close to ₹89-90 crore nett, an extraordinary achievement for a Kannada film.

Asked about whether Kantara Chapter 1 could repeat the same magic in the Hindi belt, Rishab Shetty credited the path-breaking success of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 for creating the pan-India wave. “We didn’t expect this kind of love,” Rishab said. “We made this film for Kannada audiences, but it reached wider audiences, especially in Hindi. The credit goes to Baahubali 2. That film brought this pan-India trend and expanded markets for many regional movies. I’ll give that credit to SS Rajamouli sir.”

While films like Pushpa 2 The Rule and Baahubali 2 have already set benchmarks in the Hindi market, Rishab believes that success should not be measured only in numbers. “I am not into movie number business, so I won’t be able to talk about numbers of my film, but let’s see how it fares,” he added.
