Akshay Kumar has been in the headline for non-Bollywood related matter since the past few weeks. First he broke the trend charts with his ‘apolitical’ interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and now, his Canadian citizenship has set tongues wagging.
Akshay raised several eyebrows, when he didn’t turn up for the recent Lok Sabha polling in Mumbai. Many speculations were made and when people didn’t stop questioning his absence, he released a statement, in which he revealed that he couldn’t cast his vote as he holds a Canadian passport. The actor wrote, “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others. I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”
While people have trolling Akshay mercilessly post his big announcement, Rang De Basanti actor Siddharth also took a dig at Akshay with his recent tweet to Donald Trump. The actor wrote, “Hey @realDonaldTrump since you’re getting ready to be re-elected soon, might I suggest an interview with me during your elections? I have crucial questions about how you eat fruit, your sleep and work habits and also your cute personality. I have an Indian passport. DM me please.”
While many people laughed at his sarcasm, others questioned him if he is a bona fide personality in the US or one of the highest tax-payers there like Akki is here in India. Well, they do have a point.
