Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's love for crime dramas and encyclopedic knowledge about the biggest gangsters is well known. After helming a crime trilogy—one of which is loosely based on Dawood Ibrahim, RGV is now making a film on Bangalore-based gangster, Muthappa Rai which has been titled Rai and will star Vivek Oberoi.

Known as the ‘Godfather of Bangalore', Muthappa was involved in land mafia, extortion, etc, since the mid-80s. Though Muthappa is relatively unknown outside Karnataka, Ramu feels the gangster's story has sheer drama and dynamism. RGV said that stories of Pablo Escobar, Dawood Ibrahim, Al Capone would be nothing in front of Muthappa's journey.

The 54-year-old director said the film will be will be made in four languages - Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil and will be extensively shot in Mangalore, Bangalore, Mumbai, Dubai and London.
