Ram Gopal Varma trolled for Diwali Tweet:

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma ignited a firestorm online after comparing the ongoing conflict in Gaza to the Indian festival of Diwali. It was a horrible thing to say, to be frank.

He posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“In INDIA only one day is DIWALI and in GAZA, every day is DIWALI 🔥🔥🔥”

The post drew swift and severe criticism from netizens, activists and public figures who called the remark insensitive and disrespectful. Many argued that equating a joyous festival that symbolises light and hope with the mass suffering in Gaza was deeply inappropriate.

"The impact of DDLJ is Unprecedented," says Shah Rukh Khan on 30 Years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge –

One user aptly remarked: “To you it’s a festival of lights; for Gaza, it’s a fire of bombs. Don’t compare celebration to suffering — humanity dies when empathy does.”

Political and public commentators also weighed in. Priyanka Chaturvedi called the post “hateful” and questioned how a festival of light could be likened to “crimes of war.” Meanwhile, supporters of Gaza’s victims pointed out that thousands of civilians have been killed in the territory’s recent violence, making any trivial comparison to a festival deeply insensitive.

As of now, Ram Gopal Varma has neither apologized nor provided clarifications about his post. The incident has once again highlighted the fine line public figures must tread when commenting on humanitarian crises—where satire or provocation can easily cross into perceived disrespect. What do you think, was he right or wrong? Let us know in comments.
