In a notable legal setback for Bollywood filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, the Rajasthan High Court on Monday rejected his petition seeking to quash a cheating and criminal breach of trust FIR lodged against him, his wife Shwetambari Bhatt, and others in Udaipur.

The order by Justice Sameer Jain underscored that the allegations extend beyond a simple commercial dispute and prima facie disclose elements of dishonesty, misappropriation, and lack of transparency.

Bhatt had argued that the dispute stemmed from a civil contract with complainant Dr. Ajay Murdia and should not attract criminal proceedings. He contended that the agreement included jurisdiction clauses favouring Mumbai and that any issues were contractual. However, the High Court disagreed, observing that preliminary inquiries and material collected so far suggest deliberate diversion of funds, use of inflated or fictitious invoices, and siphoning of money meant for film production for unrelated purposes — conduct that cannot be reduced to a mere civil disagreement at this stage.

The case stems from a complaint by Dr. Murdia, who entrusted funds – reportedly around ₹40–47 crore – for producing four films, including a biopic on his wife. The FIR alleges that only one project made progress, while substantial amounts were routed through third parties and vendors with no link to the films.

Bhatt and his associates are currently in judicial custody, following earlier rejection of their bail pleas. With the High Court allowing the investigation to proceed, the police inquiry into the alleged fraud and misappropriation is expected to intensify. Let's see how far this investigation goes.
