Actor Puneet Issar, who essays the role of LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) officer Fateh Singh in his directorial venture I Am Singh, recently revealed that his character is based on a real life Sikh who was subjected to departmental injustice because of his refusal to do away with the turban.
At the music launch of the movie I Am Singh, which tackles the issue of hate crimes against Sikhs in the US following the 9/11 terror attacks, Issar said, "While I was researching on the subject of hate crimes against Sikhs in the US for my movie, I came across a case of a Sikh police officer with the NYPD (New York Police Department) who had been terminated from service following his refusal to shave his beard and do away with the turban. That officer then had to fight for his rights. My character, Fateh Singh faces a similar dilemma in the movie and how he manages to overcome the odds forms a part of the film."
I Am Singh is the second film after Garv to be directed by Puneet Issar, who rose to fame as Duryodhan in the B. R. Chopra mythological series Mahabharat.
