Actress Amy Jo Johnson, who played the original pink Power Ranger Kimberly Hart in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and in two subsequent feature films, is to direct her debut feature in Canada.
The 44-year-old actress, who moved to Canada to play Jules Callaghan in the Canadian cop drama Flashpoint, wrote the film and will direct and co-star in The Space Between.
The theatrical comedy also stars fellow Flashpoint star Michael Cram, Sonya Salomaa ('The Killing'), Maria Ricossa, David Paetkau and Kristian Bruun.
X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were tapped to pen the script, while Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci are producing.
The Space Between was developed by Johnson and producer Jessica Adams through Norman Jewson's Canadian Film Center; it has Indiegogo crowdfunding and additional coin from Telefilm Canada's microbudget production program. Johnson's debut feature is one of 15 local indie projects to receive low-budget funding from Telefilm Canada, the federal government's film financier.
