No AI Cloning of Asha Bhosle Voice:
The Bombay High Court has delivered a significant judgment in favour of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, restraining the unauthorised use of her identity through AI platforms, e-commerce sites, and other parties.
In her petition, Bhosle argued that certain AI firms were cloning her voice, replicating her singing style, and creating content using her image and likeness, all without her consent. The Court accepted, at least on a prima facie basis, that these acts violated her “personality rights”—that is, her right to control her name, voice, image, persona, and other attributes of her identity.
Justice Arif S. Doctor held that making AI tools available which convert any voice into a celebrity’s voice without permission “would constitute a violation of the celebrity’s personality rights.” The Court directed that, pending final hearing, the defendants must stop using or exploiting her name, voice, vocal style, image, and likeness for any commercial or personal gain unless Bhosle gives her written consent.

Further, the Court ordered removal of infringing content and product listings from platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and YouTube, and required defendants to provide Bhosle with details of sellers or content creators responsible for misuse. This ruling marks an big step in protecting artists and public figures from identity theft and misuse in the age of advanced AI. Recently, a similar judgement was passed by the court in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan's cases.
