Filmistan Studios Sold:
Mumbai’s iconic Filmistan Studios, one of Bollywood’s earliest film factories, has been sold. On July 3, 2025, Arkade Developers reportedly acquired the 4‑acre Goregaon West site for ₹183 crore, ending a 82-year cinematic legacy of the iconic place in Goregaon, Mumbai.
Founded in 1943 by film pioneers Shashadhar Mukherjee (grandfather to Kajol and Rani Mukerji), Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee, and Rai Bahadur Chunilal, Filmistan emerged from a split with Bombay Talkies. Funded by the Nizam of Hyderabad, it quickly became a hub for classics like Shaheed, Shabnam, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Anarkali, and Nagin. The studio also hosted modern hits and shows such as Ra.One, Pagglait, The Dirty Picture, Sacred Games, and Scam 1992 in recent past.

As per reports, Arkade plans an ultra‑luxury residential complex: two 50‑storey towers with 3, 4 and 5 BHK apartments and penthouses. The project, set to launch in 2026, promises a gross development value of ₹3,000 crore.
This isn't really good news and we can understand why. The All‑India Cine Workers Association has appealed to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to halt redevelopment, warning that lakhs of technicians, junior artists, and daily‑wage workers risk losing their livelihoods.
For Bollywood, it’s the end of an era. After RK Studios and Kamalistan, Filmistan joins the list of heritage studios turned into real estate. Once bustling with production crews, camera setups, and creative magic, its soundstages will soon stand silent, overshadowed by skyscrapers. The paparazzi gang will definitely miss this place as they were often visitors of the place recently.
