Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chhillar’s gangster drama Maalik has had a disappointing start at the box office. The film collected approximately ₹2.75–3 crore nett on its opening day, which is considered a poor number for a film featuring such talented stars. Directed by Pulkit, Maalik had a lot riding on Rajkummar’s aggressive and massy avatar. But despite that, the audience turnout has been underwhelming and it was very much expected after poor trailer and low buzz before release.
The film now needs a big turnaround over the weekend to survive at the box office. A ₹10 crore weekend could still offer some hope, but that would require strong word of mouth and a steep jump in collections on Saturday and Sunday. As of now, a ₹20 crore lifetime total seems more realistic, which would put Maalik in flop territory anyway.
Meanwhile, non Hollywood film is performing better. Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, is doing good business in India. The superhero film is leading the box office, drawing more footfalls than the Hindi gangster action drama. Maalik now rests on a miracle to change its fate at the box office.
Metro In Dino
Metro In Dino, starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan, has also shown a steady hold on its second Friday. Anurag Basu's directorial added Rs. 2.25 crore nett on second Friday, which isn't a big total but a steady number.
On the other hand, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyaan, starring Shanaya Kapoor and Vikrant Massey, is almost a washout with a ₹25 lakh nett opening. The film has failed to attract audiences even in metro cities.
